CEMETERIES

Sacred Heart has two cemeteries, our original one on Rosita Street in the town of Geddes and our new cemetery in the town of Camillus.

CEMETERY CHAPEL

Almost all new cemeteries constructed today include a Chapel. Having a Chapel in our cemetery serves our needs for several different reasons.

First, the Chapel at our cemetery serves as a place of worship. A candle burns 24 hours a day next to the tabernacle to show the presence of God within. We should be encouraged that after we visit and pray at the grave of our loved one to visit the Chapel, ask God for forgiveness and to keep eternal watch over our departed family and friends.

Second, the Chapel serves as a place of Liturgy. It is used for all cemetery burial services between November and April due to the inclement weather of winter. The Chapel can also be used for a funeral Mass or service at the family's request. It has seating for 60 people, an organ to add music to your liturgy and is also handicap accessible.

Finally, Mass is offered every year on All Souls Day (November 2nd) and Memorial Day for all of the faithfully departed members of our family.

Catholic cemeteries are integrally united with Catholic belief, both in the religious values that people live by and in the belief in eternal life. Burial in a Catholic cemetery carries with it acceptance of these beliefs. Under the Canon Law of the Church, there are two reverent and holy places: our church and a consecrated cemetery, which is limited to those of the Catholic faith, but does include family members who may not embrace the Catholic religion.

USE OF OUR CEMETERY

Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lakeland, N.Y. was organized and built under the direction of Fr. Peter Gleba in 1993. Bishop Joseph O'Keefe consecrated the new cemetery in June 19, 1995. The cemetery is open to families of all Catholic churches as well as the future use for the parishioners of Sacred Heart. It is centrally located to best serve the Catholic churches of the west side of Syracuse.

FEATURES OF OUR CEMETERY

The cemetery property consists of 42 acres of land. The first section of use (Garden Section) consists of 2.3 acres and contains over 1800 graves. The graves are available in sizes ranging from 1 grave to 8 grave estate plots. There are graves for either monument or flush marker selection. Plans have been made to install Stations of the Cross.

The Garden Section is the "centerpiece" section for the entire cemetery with the main features being the 14 Stations of the Cross located through the middle of the section. Each station will be offered as a memorial.
